The relationship between your gut health and your skin

If you’re anything like me and have social media then you’ll understand the current obsession and pursuit of flawless skin. Like many of us we’ve invested and still investing significant time and money on various skincare products, hoping to achieve that coveted radiant complexion. However, what if we told you that the key to unlocking that glass skin look and truly healthy skin lies not in topical treatments, but rather in the health of your gut? 

While skincare products undoubtedly play a role in maintaining healthy skin, they often only address surface-level issues. The truth is, the root cause of many skin problems can be traced back to imbalances within the gut microbiome. The gut, often referred to as the “second brain,” houses trillions of bacteria that play a crucial role in digestion, nutrient absorption, and immune function. When this delicate balance is disrupted, it can manifest in various skin conditions such as acne, eczema, rosacea, and more.

In this article, we delve into the often overlooked connection between gut health and skincare, shedding light on why your current skincare products may not be delivering the desired results. Furthermore, we will explore effective strategies to improve your gut health, ultimately leading to a transformation in your skin’s appearance and overall well-being.

The skin is the largest and most visible organ of the human body. It performs a variety of functions, some of which include insulation, sensation, protection against pathogens, synthesis of vitamin D, protection of vitamin B folates, and temperature regulation. When it comes to keeping it healthy, we often focus on external maintenance, that is, the application of topical products, from serums, to oils and sun protection. While this is extremely important, research has shown that the health of our skin is intricately linked to the health of our gut. The gut-skin connection, as it is often referred to, highlights the importance of maintaining a balanced gut microbiome for vibrant, glowing and importantly, healthy skin.

The gut is a part of our body’s digestive system. It is a long tube-like structure that starts from our mouth and goes all the way to our bottom. Its main job is to break down the food we eat and absorb the nutrients from it so that our body can use them for energy and growth. Inside our gut, there are lots of tiny living things like bacteria and fungi that help with digestion and keep our immune system strong, which are known as the gut microbiome. They are very important for our health in many ways, like helping us digest food, keeping our immune system strong, and even affecting how we feel mentally. Various research studies have also found that the types and numbers of these tiny living things in our gut play a huge role in the health and appearance of our skin.

AN IMBALANCED GUT

An imbalance in the gut—an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine, causes partially digested food to flow into the bloodstream. This in turn triggers inflammation in the body, which shows up as skin problems such as acne, eczema, psoriasis and rosacea. A 2008 study showed that individuals who suffer from rosacea have a higher prevalence of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) than those without, and an eradication of SIBO resulted in an almost complete treatment of the skin condition. So, if we want to make the skin better, we need to fix the root problem of inflammation by making the gut healthy again. 

While the gut microbiome’s impact on the skin is a promising area of research, it’s important to note that individual responses may vary. The gut-skin connection is complex and multifactorial, influenced by genetics, diet, lifestyle, and environmental factors. Therefore, maintaining a healthy gut and achieving clear, radiant skin may require a holistic approach that considers all these factors.

HOW TO HEAL YOUR GUT

To promote a healthy gut and improve skin health, consider incorporating the following practices into your routine:       

  1. Eat a balanced diet rich in whole foods, fibre, and nutrients that support gut health. This includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and fermented foods like yoghurt, kefir, and sauerkraut.
  2. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Hydration is essential for maintaining a healthy gut and skin.
  3. Limit processed foods, refined sugars, and unhealthy fats, as they can disrupt the gut microbiome and contribute to inflammation.
  4. Consider incorporating probiotic-rich foods or taking probiotic supplements to support a healthy gut microbiome. Note: Probiotics are beneficial live microorganisms that support our health, especially our digestive system. Some probiotic-rich foods include yogurt,fermented milk products (maas, amasi), injera (fermented flatbread), ugba, ogiri, mawe (fermented cereal porridge), and mahewu. These foods contain good bacteria that help maintain a healthy gut. Our current in house favourite is the garden of Life probiotics.
  1. Manage stress through relaxation techniques such as meditation, yoga, or engaging in hobbies and activities you enjoy.
  2. Prioritise sleep and establish a regular sleep schedule. Quality sleep is essential for overall health, including gut and skin health.
  3. Avoid unnecessary antibiotic use and discuss with your healthcare provider alternatives or strategies to minimise their impact on the gut microbiome.

By taking care of your gut health, you can support the well-being of your skin. Remember, a healthy gut microbiome is the foundation for vibrant, glowing skin. So, nourish your gut, and let your skin radiate with health and vitality.
