Alara is a renowned fashion boutique which serves as a cultural hub for Lagos. As the leading high-end boutique, Alara is the go-to for several fashion events such as Our Homecoming, Homegrown and Lagos Fashion Week after-parties. Now, Alara is exploring what fashion means and creating a more inclusive industry with its latest event– a Hijabi exhibition and pop-up. The exhibit ran from the 22nd to the 30th of June.
The exhibition ALARA NOW: Hijabi, focused on inclusivity and modest fashion in the fashion industry. It was curated during the Eid-ul-Adha celebration, an Islamic holiday honouring Prophet Ibrahim's (Abraham's) willingness to obey God by sacrificing his son. Just as Ibrahim was about to make the sacrifice, God provided a ram instead. Muslims celebrate Eid-ul-Adha with prayers, family gatherings, and sharing meat from sacrificed animals with those in need.
The exhibit aims to highlight the experience of Muslim women who wear the hijab. This unique event featured a pop-up shop with a diverse range of brands, and an exhibit showcasing 15 creatives who celebrate hijabi women in their work through photography and film. Alara's initiative aimed to redefine fashion inclusivity and celebrate the fashion choices of Hijabis while offering a unique shopping experience with creations by African designers. Here are the African designers whose target audience includes Hijabis:
