The fashion industry is changing and finally catching up with Africa. Africans have always been stylish and have been the inspiration for several foreign brands with DIOR SS20 recognised as an African concept. The collection, which collaborated with Ivorian designer Pathé'O and women from Morocco's Atlas Mountains, caused a stir. The genesis of the controversy was whether it was cultural appropriation or appreciation, with many settling for the latter. This issue made it easy for another to go unnoticed– where were the African stars at the front row?
Africa is often disregarded when it comes to the global industry. However, it is the 2020s and the world is evolving. African stars are at the Grammys, at the Oscars, at the Met Gala and high fashion shows. The Louis Vuitton SS25 was a star-studded show and this includes our very own African stars. This is not the first time Pharrell (creative director of Louis Vuitton) has embraced Africans. The AW24 show featured a capsule collection with Tyler Okonma (Tyler The Creator).
